WorldForge Home
The WorldForge project is about building tools to allow the construction of virtual worlds. The original community came together over a decade ago, out of a desire to create a game that was better and freer than Ultima Online. But as the aims of the project evolved and became more ambitious, the overall goal changed. Instead of one game, we instead decided build a flexible framework that would allow everyone to contribute their own unique ideas and goals to the Worldforge project, allowing a multitude of games to be created. Our core focus is the construction of a complete system with all the tools, technology, content and artwork required to build complex persistent online virtual worlds.
Our ideas list can be found in the WorldForge wiki
The code for finished student projects can be found at WorldForge's GSoC 2010 page on Google Code. The changes will also be integrated into the main source tree right now, so soon you should be able to just get a checkout and try the new cool features.
You can also consider working on the NEL engine. The NeL folks are tagging along for this GSoC, you can see their list of proposed projects on their wiki.
NeL is a toolkit for the development of massively online universes. It provides the base technologies and a set of development methodologies for the development of both client and server code. It contains for instance a 3d engine, a network engine, a sound engine. NeL is working on Windows, Linux and Mac under GNU General Public License. The Ryzom MMORPG is based on NeL framework and is the best example of what you can do with NeL.
